CGSL-ENABLE MELA (GCD-17th November, 2007)

Be an enabler-make a child smile

At CGSL volunteers not only made a child smile … but also made his day a memorable one…

Enable being the CSR initiative at CGSL through which effort is made to develop the next generation through funding, volunteering & advocacy; it seemed appropriate to celebrate GCD as Enable Mela-a day to celebrate the joy of giving & sharing.

A mere look at the statistics across Mumbai & Chennai indicated that the volunteers had managed to touch many lives…

No of exhibition stalls that were put up: 13
No of under-privileged children who participated in the program: 420
No of volunteers who participated: 720

At Mumbai & Chennai sites the event was dedicated to two activities: exhibition by the participating NGOs and Buddy Program-which simply put, means sharing the joy, hope and aspiration of our little friends by being their friend for a day.

The exhibition stalls & the Buddy program activities for the children-both had an overwhelming response. .While it was relay race, spoon & marble & three-legged race at Mumbai that had the children and volunteers in high spirits it was the puppet, clown & Badavi show at Chennai. The DJ and music at Mumbai had no respite as children and volunteers danced away to the beats of the music.

The guided tour of the premise and insight into the functioning of financial services BPO was another highlight of the day and had many children wanting to grow up and be a part of CGSL.

As the day ended CEO & MD Rahul Singh said:

CGSL has always shown a spirit of service – whether it’s to our clients or the community. Volunteering is a big part of Enable and this is where all of us put in our time, commitment and skills to help in developing the next generation. This year the response is overwhelming and I am delighted to have been part of this initiative with 720 CGSL volunteers across our sites bringing joy and learning to these children. I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with the children and NGOs.

The volunteers and the children shared similar feelings. For both though the day had ended heartfelt memories remained……

Scribing for the Blind-CGSL CHENNAI

“Some people are known by their deeds, some by their vision. The visually challenged candidates we scribed for had poor eyesight but they had a clarity of vision that shone through quite brightly” This is the feeling shared by most of the CGSL employees who participated in the scribing initiative at Loyola College

There was an overwhelming response in spite of the fact that most of the volunteers had tough deadlines and deliverables at work. It was amidst such challenging circumstances that the scribes volunteered for this initiative. The volunteers scribed for 35 examinations and CGSL in all - 62 examinations.

Due to this initiative the level of awareness about CGSL is quite high on the campus, so much so that some of the college organizers recognize the scribes by the units they belong to!.

Scribing is a very different experience from other kind of social work people tend to engage in. It gives people some kind of positive vibes. People feel upbeat about life and look up to the differently abled students taking up the exams with respect and dignity (and not sympathy and pity). The positive attitude around the whole exercise evokes such strong positive energy and appreciation that is hard not to notice.

Going forward, the team hopes to be able to contribute by reading to the students during weekends & converting their textbooks into audiotapes by voice recording. The stellar service rendered by CGSL in the past two years has made the staff and students of Loyola College look forward to CGSL volunteers on the campus every time there is an exam!
