Enabling a stronger community

Whether it is interacting closely with organizations, exploring more avenues or hosting special stalls and donating money and goodies, we are committed to making a difference. In the past, we have undertaken a number of activities including blood donation, clothes donation, visits to orphanages and others. Now as our company grows, there is a need to consolidate our efforts under a common umbrella: "Enable" is one such initiative.
The colour RED unites us

Red is the colour of blood; red is also the colour of our passion for a cause. After all it’s our blood that unites us across caste creed and nationality. Be it wearing the colour red or donating blood; the response from us is overwhelming. The blood donation camp was carried out at Nesco, one of CGSL’s facilities in Mumbai, in partnership with the TATA Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai. Over two hundred CGSL employees stepped forward to contribute to this social cause.
Mumbai underwater, but hope floats

On 26th June 05 Mumbai experienced a natural calamity similar in its devastation effects as the Hurricane Katrina in US. The deluge caused by rains on that day, coupled with high tides flooded the city across all low lying costal areas. Our offices and its employees were directly under threat of this deluge. But we stood ground through some speedy action from Citigroup Realty Services, who ensured protection of our facilities and setting up employee movement to business continuity sites. In spite of personal tragedies faced, our people under Enable, a social responsibility forum in CGSL sprung into action long before any NGO/Support group to provide relief material for the weaker sections of the society, most affected by this calamity. Through multiple collection drives in all offices we collected over 600-700kgs of essentials including food grains like rice, wheat flour, salt; essential medicines; domestic utensils like glasses, spoons, bowls, jugs etc; clothes, bed sheets, blankets and other basic requirements. These were distributed within just 10 days through association with an NGO - Aakanksha.

Additionally United Way has initiated a project to start a United Way Mumbai Resource Center that is an online listing as well as a helpline for Mumbai which lists NGOs/Hospitals/Police and other institutions that work for disaster management. CGSL is playing a lead role in the set up of this Resource Center. Our employees have donated generously for its set up.
United Way: A benchmark

An affiliate of United Way International (UWI), United Way is an organization that inspires companies and foundations to volunteer and build caring communities. Through Enable, over 1500 employees from
13 CGSL offices in India have joined hands with United Way, to raise a whopping Rs.17,62,480/- for Jan-Dec 2005, via their payroll.

The CGSL ENABLE CSR case study with such a high participation sets a yardstick for corporate giving and corporate participation in community development programs – an inspiring first step, to say the least.
More activities

We also volunteered a minimum of a day’s salary as our contribution to the Tsunami Relief Fund.

We also regularly volunteer and make small contributions to the Make-A-Wish-Foundation.
e-Smile movement to bring a smile on to children’s faces

e-Smile - the CGSL Society Moved to Instill Love with Empathy - was founded in October 2003, with a simple mission - to bring back smiles to innocent faces.

From modest beginnings at St. Catherine's Home for Girls and St. Dominic Savio Boy’s home where we extended our help to orphans, unwed mothers and minors, we have come a long way. We celebrated a special Diwali week with the underprivileged. Contributions – whether monetary or otherwise – poured in from all corners. The overwhelming response was heartening to say the least.

‘Candle’ is our way of telling the world that we care and love

From voluntary blood donation camps through which we have provided timely assistance at hospitals to donating clothes for the needy to monetary aid for MITHRA (Madras Institute to Habilitate Retarded Afflicted), Candle (CAre aND LovE) is a humble effort to give back to society in whichever way possible. Through Candle, we have also made monetary contributions to the CRY and Concern India Foundation.

During the Diwali of 2003, we set up a stall of gift items – including greeting cards, candles, linen, wall hangings, soft toys, envelopes, etc. made by the inmates of MITHRA. “We have no doubt that we are able to survive in this world because you care enough to help us to help these disabled children” – these congratulatory words were a great acknowledgement and inspiration for us.
